This was going on in my mind for the last couple of days and i decided to write it down in my own blog. Then I thought it might be a good idea for an open discussion here.....

Which one are you/would you rather be ? Would either one come to a conclusion as to who is more of the useful kind in the real world ?

(Whether you are the one in the white coat sticking a thermometer under someone's tongue or the one in the white coat pippetting all night long, it doesn't matter... we are all lab rats and we would probably remain so for the rest of our lives inspite of everything that i have just jotted down ....)

You are completely stressed out and exhausted. You hardly got any sleep last night ...again ! Inspite of working harder with not much of a financial gain as expected and more personal compromises, the senior authorities always seem to be dissatisfied. Hardly any sympathy from the public and their demands only seem to be increasing everyday. The services no longer receive the deserved acknowledgement and if anything the public only seem to be less grateful day by day. Any amount of experience still doesnt seem to be good enough and government's fidilities with the funding and buying of equipments only leaves you more frustrated. The numerous advanced degrees and accolades hanging on the wall in your dingy office are merely covering up that hole in the wall you made when you were frustrated which only left you with swollen knuckles and not a thing changed . The external rewards and appreciation, autonomy and job security are that of the past. Peer pressure, highly criticizing authorities, the precarious condition of your relationship with your spouse/parter due to lack of devoting enough time to him/her, being at the mercy of another collaborating specialist who drives you crazy with his condesceding attitude, when you try to sleep your brain starts churning again thinking 'when will i ever settle down in a permanant job and breathe properly again' ..... does this briefly sum up your life at the moment ?
What keeps you going on ?? - Perhaps your dedication to your field / interesting work /passion for whatever it is that you are doing eventhough you are cursing yourself day in and day out for choosing this in the first place / making a difference however big/small in the society and seeing that happen ???

So that brings me back to the same question - which one are you/would you rather be and who would you say is more of the useful kind for the society ?

Diwali - behind the scenes Print E-mail

The Diwali celebration was a grand success Smile (thanks to all the participants –on stage, and off stage) and I am still unable to bring myself out of the festive mood (thanks to all the wonderfully written blogs). So I wanted to write down a jist of what happened behind the scenes which had made the event what it was!

A group of Indians  , when I say Indians, I literally mean from all parts of the country - North, South, East and West India, got together and formed committees, all willingly agreeing to share their talents and work towards one cause ! Ripu, the (unanimously untold but silently accepted) coordinator of all committees and our big ‘dada’ was not only actively working all round the clock but also encouraging us all through.

Few weeks prior to Diwali….

One group took upon the responsibility of entertainment, the other – food and grocery shopping, yet another decoration and ambiance …so on and so forth…soon it became evident that the number of tasks ahead clearly outnumbered the number of committees. Multi tasking was readily taken up (or rather forced upon Wink ). Nevertheless, all were enthusiastic enough to find time at the fag end of the day, after office hours, for meetings/rehearsals. I still remember wanting Shirin and Vijay to stay back for an infrastructure management discussion but they had to rush for their singing practice with Sureshji, Sumangala and Sunirmala. It was when I first heard them on stage that I realized how hard all of them must have practiced for such a wonderfully coordinated performance whilst also juggling between infrastructure management discussions/office/family. Ofcourse, it is to be admitted that before each meeting, at least 7-8 emails were sent back and forth and after each meeting suggestions and opinions were always more than actual decisions taken. Sometimes for every 5 steps forward, it seemed like we were forced to take 2 steps backward.

Sudarshan had the hardest job of all – taking care of the accounts and maintaining the expenses within the budget !! Very close to the Diwali date, the registrations had exceeded the grand total of 100 and we were forced to look for a new venue. This meant (a) total change of several planned stuff (b) bigger hall and higher rent and (c) as soon as possible. Sudarshan’s quick thinking and action to book the hall in Brabrand during this time is really laudable!

A couple of days prior to the D-day, Ripu was returning from an unexpected official trip he had to make and on the way to Aarhus he did most of the shopping for the appetizers/starters and some groceries as well. Such was his dedication! Cecilia’s involvement was no less, while on her trip to Italy, between spending time with her parents and managing her little daughter, she bought most of the gifts.

On the day of Diwali….

The early birds set the ball rolling starting from 10 a.m. in the morning. Abhijit Rangnekar’s efforts in taking charge of the infracture planning all along with Vidu (& co) and the execution was almost near to perfection.  While Arcot’s innovative ‘find a chit and form the team’ Quiz was being rehearsed, cooking was taking place vigourously in the kitchen.

Cooking for about 120 people is no ordinary feat! Although Raghu, Ripu, Sudarshan, Vaishali were the main players in the field, it would have never been done on time without solid contributions from Abhijit Bendre, Arcot, Vidu, Vijay, Shirin and others. A full 3 course meal was managed (lot of credit goes to Raghu as evidenced in the ‘vadas’): entrée, main course and desert  – and we were off to a great start….

Rest is a memorable history….

The early birds left the venue as nocturnal birds only after leaving the hall spic and span!

(Space is limited but contributions were unlimited,

So pardon me if I have missed out on any …

As I already mentioned,

This is only a jist of the contributions,  aplenty  Wink)

Every time I make a trip to India, I find it almost impossible to leave for Aarhus as the date of departure gets closer. Despite the enormous efforts to drag myself to the airport and motivate myself with the thoughts of going back to lab and making yet another attempt at getting fantastic results as my ever-enthusiastic supervisor would say to all of us….the ease with which I adjust back to the academic rigmarole, after every trip, is indeed amazing !

Last week, I met a friend in India who was insistent in knowing my daily routine, the way I spend time in Aarhus, my friends there and the culture. I was speaking non-stop for almost an hour and it was then that I realized how much I had enjoyed being in Aarhus whilst also cribbing about the cold windy weather Smile So I thought I would just pen down a few of the many amazing things about the ‘daily life’ in Aarhus that I had experienced in the last two years there…..I am not sure where to begin, so I shall just randomly list in no specific geographic order or an order of any kind:

  1. 7 Eleven: Hungry and traveling at late hours? Just look for the nearest 7 Eleven and get in ! Well, this is one of the best places for quick take aways such as coffees, hot snacks and pastries. Their strawberry milkshake is awesome! There is a 7 eleven just opposite to the main railway station and the neighboring sandwich shop is also worth visiting if you want to grab a sandwich to eat during your train journey. To endure a long journey without food or just a cup of black coffee that you can get on the train is no fun.
  2. Fakta: Frustrated that shops close down at 18:00 hrs ? Fakta is the most convenient place for students to do their grocery shopping. Although not all Faktas are open till late, the one near Tandleage kollegiet is open until 21:00 hrs and all through the week ! This is relatively close to the university. I have found it very convenient to shop there on my way back from lab in the late evenings.
  3. Stor Center Nord: Once again close to university, one of the best shopping complexes in the city! I could find almost anything there from clothes to groceries…..
  4. Bruun’s gallery: With the theatre too in the complex, it is a lovely hangout on a Friday evening. I was so excited when I first came to know that I can finally watch English movies in English, without being dubbed ! And that  is probably one of the reason why almost every Dane speaks good comprehensible English and (un)fortunately it is the reason why I hardly know any Danish, besides my failed attempts at trying to learn the 3 types of pronunciation of the letter ‘d’ in Danish Embarassed
  5. Shopping street: Bustling with activity! The best place to be if you want to get out of lab for a couple of hours on a gray Saturday afternoon. Make sure to carry your wallet if you cannot resist the temptation of getting into Magasin, Salling, H&M, Designertorvet …..
  6. Bazar Vest: The genuine Bazaar! Without Bazaar Vest, my ‘dhal chawal with Bhindi sabji’ which is almost a regular every fortnight in my home, wouldn’t be possible Laughing
  7. IKEA: I promise if you get in, you would never come out without buying any little thing. I love their free refills for cola.
  8. Den Gamle By: Definitely worth visiting. Christmas is probably the best time.
  9. Numerous restaurants: Are you complaining about the lack of variety in Danish cuisine? Italian, Vietnamese, Chinese, Indian, Mexican….you name it and you got it! Fast food? – There is the good old Mc D and Burger King…

Well, I guess I should I also mention activities that didn’t necessarily cause a hole in my wallet ...

  1. Beaches: Coming from a coastal place in India, what I like best about Aarhus are the beaches. Although it lacks the charm of Indian beaches – I mean the roadside chaat and pakora shops, the beaches in Aarhus are nevertheless second to none! The first time I spotted a Jelly fish was at the Moesgaard Beach!! Summer time is the best where you can swim, relax in the sun or even do some sports on the water.
  2. Stroll in the forests: There are several and one of the best places for a nice quiet evening stroll.
  3. The Botanical garden: Close to the university, good place to go on a picnic with friends….
  4. Cycling: Last but not the least and the best activity one can take up in Aarhus without worrying about  (a) traffic (cyclists are most respected on the road next to pedestrians), (b) being self conscious about riding on a cycle to a party dressed in your best outfit (I have seen Professors all decked up in smart suits and ties and riding a bike), (c) gasoline costs (however, keep a handy puncture kit and air pump ready while venturing out for long). What more – the best way to burn all the accumulated fat!!! Wink

I can go on and on….but I have to stop somewhere and I shall stop here. It is a wonder how one can lose track of time so easily, in just a couple of years but memories stay forever Smile
